    • Nick Boyde is a sharp operator in London, living the good life and, apparently happy. But he seems unable to sustain any real relationships because he refuses to share anything important about himself and his past. After an expensive dinner with some Russian property developers and then the night with an old friend for some satisfying sex, he arrives at hos office to meet his partner, Jo, to go for the meeting to finalise the financing of their property deal. Instead Jo tells him that the General Records Office have told the company to hold on it because they are questioning Nick's legal identity because they have not found his birth certificate in their records. They want to know who he really is. Nick is forced to travel to Yorkshire to meet his hated parents and find out what else they have done to ruin his life. Nick left home when he was 16 and promised never to return so he arrives with much apprehension but no one is home.
Nick breaks in and finds little to help him but and envelope with his birth date written on it and the name and address of someone else. he goes to the address on the envelope and finds out from a neighbour that the man left many years ago and was often in trouble with the police so he might be in jail. Nick goes to the local police station to see if they knew the man and where he might be now so he can talk to him. While there, a plain clothes officer shows unusual interest in him and the envelope he showed the desk officer. He makes a call to someone, raising an alert. Nick tells them he has to go the local hospital to see if they can give him a copy of his birth certificate. When he is leaving the hospital he sees two thugs approaching and when he runs, one of them produces a gun and they chase him. He eludes them and then follows them to a block of council flats where they call on someone at one of the flats. Later he returns to talk to the person. A middle-aged woman lives there. She is Cathy Stewart, a mid-50s faded beauty who keeps her spirits up by knocking back the spirits. She claims to know the man he is looking for and they are forced to escape together in her car when the gunmen return to check her flat. As the story unfolds, he finds himself getting deeper and deeper into a world governed by criminals as a local businessman, determined to keep his former life as a gangster secret, forces his men to hunt them down.
Caught up in this race is Ella, a local solicitor in Leeds who Nick approaches for help in finding the evidence he needs to prove his identity. She turns out to be the childhood sweetheart he left behind and they fall for one another again. The question is whether he will survive the confusion and violence now around him to be able to have any life at all.
