    • Synopsis
    • DER KAISER VON ATLANTIS is a four act opera allegory in which the third reich era is ruled by madness and death. Its creators—Viktor Ullmann and Peter Kien—wrote and rehearsed it in the most unexpected place: a concentration camp. The opera was a barely disguised parody of Hitler and a resistance statement against totalitarianism. The authors could not attend the premiere—they were killed in the gas chamber two weeks after the first rehearsal.
Thanks to a miraculous chain of events, the original opera manuscript was spared from destruction.
In 2016 “DER KAISER VON ATLANTIS” was on stage in two european theatres: Teatro Real in Madrid and Theater Na De Dam in Amsterdam, and in 2017 it will be once more in Teatro de la Maestranza in Sevilla.
This film is about this opera, its background, and the meaning of its message to today’s world.
