Fritz Lang’s silent film METROPOLIS is the most important work in German film history. But the original version of 1927 was thought lost and nobody expected the missing scenes to reappear.
Yet this is just what happened in summer 2008 in Buenos Aires. There a 16mm copy of METROPOLIS containing a large part of the material thought lost was found. Some thirty minutes! An international sensation!
The Argentinean find is soon to be brought to Germany. And its restoration can begin. It will be presented in 2010 at the Berlinale. This means that we will have the opportunity to be there with the camera from the beginning and peer over the film restorers’ shoulders.
THE JOURNEY TO METROPOLIS can begin. First we will fly to Buenos Aires and let Paula Félix-Didier of the Museo del Cine tell about her find. Other important stops on our trip are Berlin, Paris, New York and Moscow.
Designated film historians and archivists Wolfgang Klaue (Berlin), Vladimir Dmitriev (Moscow), Enno Patalas (Munich) and Martin Koerber (Berlin) will share with us their METROPOLIS experiences.
Thus we will recount the exciting story of Metropolis, its mutilation and the long search for the missing material.
