    • Synopsis
    • 1939. RUTH (25) a young Jewish woman, gets off a ship in Valparaíso. Far away from her native Poland. She has arrived alone. Her husband, her parents and her history have all been left behind. They remained in Poland in the hopes of fixing their visas and joining her soon. RUTH tried to wait for them, but they convinced her to leave. Then Germany invades Poland, and nobody is able to leave.
Alone in a strange country, RUTH tries to survive surrounded by other refugees. But, in view of the news she constantly hears, she decides to leave those who remind her of her loved ones and takes refuge in the only thing that makes her feel human, her violin.
The only job RUTH is able to find is playing her violin in a female orchestra in a cabaret. “From wife of a printer to violinist to sailors and whores”. One night, she meets JUAN (29) a Mapuche boxer who is on his way to become the Chilean champion. For him, this triumph is his way of erasing the words of his teachers at boarding school, when they told him that he “was a good-for-nothing Indian”.
When JUAN sets eyes on RUTH he falls madly in love and tries to woo her. RUTH avoids him once and again, until JUAN convinces her and she goes on a date with him. RUTH told him her entire story as if it burned her inner self; he listens. RUTH is attracted to this man with large hands who treats her like a fragile piece of glass. But, she says they can go on seeing each other with one condition: any relationship between them will end when her husband manages to escape from Europe. JUAN accepts.
Together, they start to share their love, and are happy despite the many differences that exist between them; they survive together facing a hostile world.
The war comes to an end, news items of the horror come in relays. The sole survivor of her extended family is her husband SIMJA. RUTH makes arrangements to bring him to Chile. She must now face Juan and say goodbye, in spite of her love for him.
