    • Synopsis
    • The journey of the two main characters through the whole country is a great reason for reviewing the situation of the contemporary Poland. It’s a portrait of Poland after 20 years of democracy, which is to encourage the audience to think how we lived “yesterday” and how we will live “tomorrow”. Thanks to the fact that our protagonists had their youth and adult life in the times of People’s Republic of Poland and their age makes them make the first summing ups, their perception is even sharper and sensitive to many nuances.
Witek is a retired miner, a long time widower, who for his miner’s gratuity bought a taxi and earns some extra money to his retirement driving a taxi. Witek has spent the recent years behind the wheel and has driven thousands of kilometers; he has never seen anything but Silesia. Silesia is his small homeland and the whole world.
Barbara is a retired piano and singing teacher, who has lived in an informal relationship with a known painter, the love of her life, for the last 20 years. His sudden death makes Basia’s world collapse. She lost the only close person and also her financial support which gave her modest but calm life. Barbara wishes to fulfill her deceased friend’s will and scatter his ashes at the sea in the place where they met once in the past.
Witek offers Barbara his help and undertakes to take her from Silesia to Hel.
They come from different social classes, they have different sensitivity, different understanding of the world, they believe in different values and have different life experience. What brings them closer to one another is loneliness and hostility of the rapacious world of the new young Poland, Poland which is making a pile in its new system. Left to one another, they find common emotions, their prejudices vanish, and the friendship and understanding come to existence, or maybe it’s a feeling coming in the autumn of their lives.
