    • 16-year-old Graeme is hanging out with his unambitious friends in a Portland, Oregon suburb, but he's not fully there. His spirit is shattered after the sudden loss of his grandmother, his sole caregiver and a musical free spirit. Now, his older sister, Mary, is trying to step up to meet their financial responsibilities, but her community college degree isn't winning anyone over in the local job market. An opportunity arises when the siblings are rummaging through old cardboard boxes to organize an estate sale. They discover a series of cassette recordings that Grandma left behind, with personalized messages and heartbreaking melodies. Impressed by her beautiful, acoustic, and unreleased tunes, they decide to form a band in order to popularize her songs and pay the bills.

After landing on "The Cassettes" as their band name, Graeme and Mary hope to join the ranks of other 90s musical acts, such as Radiohead, Tupac, Nirvana, and Britney Spears. However, their pursuit is jeopardized by bad influences and a rapidly changing industry. Blake, an eccentric vinyl record store owner, tries to manage the act but their ceiling for success is capped in this rain-drenched suburb and Blake's management practices are highly questionable. When one of Graeme's unruly friends supplies him with a bag of cocaine, leading to a drug-fueled performance, Mary threatens to pull the plug on the entire band project. Graeme flees to L.A. to make it big on his own. While there, he also falls in love. The future for "The Cassettes" looks bright but the ruinous effects of fame clash against Graeme's sheltered existence, and his sister Mary tries to keep him from going over the edge.

All in all, the story offers YA viewers an opportunity to vicariously experience the journey of fame, as this sibling duo tries to navigate the pitfalls of the entertainment industry and pay tribute to their late grandma's music.
