    • Synopsis
    • In South Africa the custom of male circumcision is taboo: a bastion protecting
Xhosa tribal power from the influence of modern government. The tradition is
as dangerous as it is secret. Last year more than 50 boys died and hundreds
more were permanently disfigured or left infertile. Yet young men still flock to
initiation school in their thousands, just as Xhosa director Mayenzeke Baza did
      as a teenager.
Previous films on the subject have been censored, but the tide is now changing.
Mayenzeke has gained access to this secretive world after years of research. He and a
small Xhosa crew are currently filming during this June’s circumcision season. With unique
access to a traditional ingcibi, Mr Cekiso, and his young apprentice, Gcinikaya, this film will
present an unseen story to the world. These men have the future of dozens of young boys,
      quite literally, in their hands.
This modern African rite of passage takes us to the heart of much that is changing in
South Africa today. From urban townships to rural homesteads, ‘The Boy, The Blade and
The Man’ will be a roller-coaster ride through the experience which all Xhosa boys must
undergo in order to be considered a man in their society. Once a free service provided by
elders for the youngsters, initiation also imparted words of advice and wisdom. Now
money and peer pressure rule, and the result can be deeply tragic.
