    • The captain, a veteran of war and partisan, lives in a mysterious forest with a young and odd squire. Suddenly a fascist soldier, who has lost his memory, arrives in the forest. The balance between the captain and squire is broken by the arrival of this third character who will trigger a series of unpredictable events. With the progress of the story it turns out that the three characters are actually in a kind of limbo, forced to stay together in the woods. The final scene explains why they can’t go anywhere else.
The basic theme of "The Awful Wars" is that even the most atrocious and devastating wars, at first, are generated by internal conflicts that every single person holds inside. The personal hell that every man carries inside is projected outside in the world, materializing in discrimination and violent ideologies that lead to real wars. If every human being is be able to overcome his inner conflicts then even wars will disappear like snow in the sun. The real revolution starts from the individual, not by the masses.
No war within, no war without.
"The Awful Wars" deals with the First and Second World Wars, the two greatest wars mankind has experienced and the title is taken from a phrase of Machiavelli that for "horrendous" meant great, extraordinary. The film is set in the forests of the province of Vicenza in Italy and the screenplay, written by Livio Pacella in collaboration with the two authors, Luca Immesi and Giulia Brazzale, is freely based from a theatre play written by Pino Costalunga.
The film has been produced with the contribution of Mibact (Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism) and it has received the recognition of national cultural interest. It’s also been produced with the contribution of the Veneto region by regional film fund and with associate producers and private sponsors, with the patronage of the municipality and the province of Vicenza, with the help of Vicenza film commission. During the last Venice Film Festival, the project, although never screened in public, has received the "Glass Lion", a newly independent established award that wants to enhance audiovisual professionals of Veneto.
"The Awful Wars" is the second film project of Luca Immesi and Giulia Brazzale, produced by Esperimentocinema. Luca Immesi graduated from European school of Economics with a degree in Mass Communication and Broadcasting validated by Nothingham Trent University. He specialised in Filmmaking at New York University. Giulia Brazzale graduated in Psychology at Università degli Studi di Firenze. They have worked together since 2003. Their first film, Ritual–A psychomagic story, is a thriller about psycho-magic with a cameo of Alejandro Jodorowsky. It participated in several festivals (Copenhagen Pix, Pifan South Korea, Fantasia Montreal, London and Oporto underground film festival, Atlantic film festival) and it has been sold internationally in nine countries and theatrically distributed in Italy.
