    • Synopsis
    • Unwed women in China over the age of twenty-seven are refered to as 'Shengnu', AKA 'The Leftover Women'. The 'A' men marry the 'B' women, the 'B' men marry the 'C' women and the 'C' men marry the 'D' women, leaving these 'A' class women - highly educated and with succesful careers - cut out of the marriage market. The 'A' women want to marry, but not in vain or at the sacrifice of the high-standards they have built for themselves. In a country where there will be 120 million men for every 100 million women within five years, 'The A Women' explores the cultural phenomenon of the Shengnu and the negotiation between modernity and tradition facing women in contemporary China.
