    • Synopsis
    • Romania 1968: Mihai (27), a charismatic medical assistant teaching at the university, spends most of his time struggling to keep his family out of trouble. His rebellious younger brother Doru (18) jeopardizes his last school year by writing dangerous petitions and his father Tudor (58), once a passionate socialist but then discriminated by the communist system, indulges in his only passion: alcohol. His mother died long ago and Mihai, without being aware of it, takes on her role in this chaotic family. With great effort, he manages to organize a travel permission for a vacation to East Germany. He hopes the summer holiday will give his father a new lease on life and therefore slowly ease the huge burden of responsibility he carries.
The three men set off in their old Volga. But their vacation ends abruptly in East Germany after Soviets tanks cross their way and knock down Prague’s Spring. The family is taken to a guarded military camp and can’t return home as the border is closed. In this extreme situation Tudor starts to drink again, while Doru eagerly sets up a riot. And Mihai has to fight to keep his family intact. Mihai finally manages to inform the Romanian embassy of their whereabouts. Due to his courage, they receive a transit visa for West Germany to return home.
Mihai, Tudor and Doru enter the West for the first time. Tudor’s appetite for life awakes and Doru and Mihai are overwhelmed by the apparent unbounded freedom. The three spend two beautiful days in Munich. They stay in an apartment which Ulli - a German girl Mihai met at the camp - shares with other students. Mihai begins a romance with her. But when Tudor suffers heart failure and dies, the bubble bursts. Mihai can’t convince Doru to stay in the West. The young idealist wants to return to his beloved girlfriend and to bury their father at home. And Mihai has to choose between a new and exciting life with Ulli and the love for his brother. Initially he decides to stay, but when Doru is pressured by the Securitate, Mihai feels, he belongs to his brother and returns to Romania too.
Based on true facts, That Trip we Took with Dad asks a simple question: How free are we really to choose freedom?
