Tante Murti (45) is an Indonesian woman who has been longing for a man her whole life. Finally she meets Piet, a Dutchman. They marry, but soon Tante Murti finds out that he has a mental problem. Many years, she's dedicated to her husband, but at the end she has to place him in a mental institution.

    • Synopsis
    • This story is about Tante Murti and Piet. The film takes place in Indonesia and Holland. The story consists of four parts. Each part is told by a different person and has a different style.
      Part 1. (1-10 minutes). 1975. Told by Maya (9 years old). Maya is the niece of Tante Murti. Tante Murti is 45, but still not married. Tante Murti tries to find a partner by filling in a pal-pen form. Maya, disliking her aunt, purposely fills in the wrong code. After a few weeks there is an answer. The man, Piet, from Holland, has sent a letter and an 8mm film of himself.
      Location: This part takes place in Indonesia (rainy season).
      Part 2. (10-40 minutes). 1977. Told by Tante Murti (47 years old). After 2 years Piet comes to Indonesia to marry Tante Murti. Piet behaves ‘strange’. The family warns Tante Murti but Tante Murti denies it and marries Piet. They leave for Holland. When Tante Murti enters Piet’s house it hasn’t been cleaned for years. Piet is sad that his house (and life) is been put upside down.
      Location: This part takes place in Indonesia (dry season; sunny) and Holland (spring; fresh look).
      Part 3. (40-70 minutes). 1982. Told by Oom Piet (52 years old). Piet acts weirder. He is aware of it. Piet adores Tante Murti, but he gets annoyed when she is overbearing. He sometimes hits her. Tante Murti dedicates her life to Piet, but it gets harder for her when Piet has his aggressive moods. Tante Murti works to earn money but falls ill for the first time in her life. She is overworked.
      Location: This part takes place in Holland (autumn; brown look).
      Part 4. (70-90 minutes). 1985. Told by Maya (19 years old). Maya arrives in Holland. Oom Piet is aggressive. The doctor tries to convince Tante Murti to place Piet in a mental institution, but she is not ready for it. Tante Murti and Piet depend on each other. It’s Maya who arranges everything. Tante Murti and Maya are sad when Oom Piet is taken into the psychiatric institution.
