    • Synopsis
    • A small industrial town in northeastern Ukraine is busy
dismantling closed sections of a huge factory. The scrap-
yard is the second most important place in the town, after the factory itself. Twelve-year-old Maloy (“Kid”) has no
father, and his mother drinks heavily. The only significant
person in his life is his older brother, nicknamed Graviura
(“Engraving”), who is known for his artistic engravings
on headstones. Graviura is also a drug addict protected
by corrupt police and gangsters who take cuts from the
small drug business he runs. Maloy’s dream is to break
free from his godforsaken town, together with his brother.
One day in the woods running from a stray dog, Maloy
stumbles upon a World War II tank with the remains of a
German officer inside. He also finds a military token with
a number on it lying nearby. He immediately knows that
this could be his ticket to riches. The boy takes part of
the tank’s shutter to the scrapyard, where the workers
immediately recognize what it is. In no time, the rumour
spreads that somebody had found a military rarity likely
      worth a million dollars.
Maloy asks his computer nerd friend to help him find
relatives of the German officer. They manage to contact
his great-grandson, who wants to repatriate the remains
and is willing to pay someone to help him do so.
Meanwhile, the Rovnyi brothers, local gangsters, a
hard-nosed police major and a gang of homeless youths
begin looking into the rumour about the million dollar
find. Hoping to somehow benefit, everyone tells what
they know. When the German arrives, he is followed
closely, as are Maloy and Graviura.
The policeman takes Graviura hostage in an attempt
to blackmail Maloy into giving up the tank’s location.
Graviura, however, dies from being tortured. Maloy is
devastated, realizing that the treasure that had seemed
to be a chance for escape had caused the death of the
only person he had ever cared about. His despair turns
to rage, and with nothing left to lose, he seeks revenge.
Maloy lures the Rovnyi brothers into the forest along
with the police major, who brings the naïve German
along. The gangsters and the policeman join forces to
catch Maloy and force him to take them to the tank.
The stray dog suddenly appears and attacks the Rovnyi
brothers’ dog. One of the Rovnyis instinctively grabs his
gun, setting off a massacre, with everyone shooting at
      everyone else.
Maloy and the German manage to hide and are the
only ones to survive. The German regrets his attempt to retrieve his great-grandfather’s remains, but he offers
Maloy the opportunity to leave town with him. Hav-
ing fought to survive, Maloy decides to stay, letting his
dream to escape leave with the German.
