    • Synopsis
    • On September 11, 2008, the radio announced that in Pando, a department of Bolivia in the Amazon, a group of rural residents were massacred. The following day, the government declared a state of siege in the region. The rural community, the government of Evo Morales and some media sources, denounced Pando’s Prefect Leopoldo Fernández and the civil servants working under him, as those responsible for the occurrences. Other media sources in Bolivia, as well as the opposition, implicated Evo Morales’ government and the Minister of the Presidency as strategists of a genocide aimed at militarizing Pando. The different versions kept me from understanding exactly what happened. I left my house and headed for The Bolivian Amazon. The image that traveled the world ran through my mind: residents escaping through the river, and bullets from the snipers who didn’t stop shooting at them. I heard the commentaries on TV that it was a phony video. On the shores of the Tahuamanu River, I promised myself I would investigate every detail to uncover the whole truth.
The pain, the wounds, the mourning, all come when dialogue gives way to violence. Celedonio Basualdo and Pedro Oshiro can no longer discuss their differences. They are victims without a voice, without life, without a future, without justice. When did this begin? And how? Who is to blame? Wasn’t there a massacre? Were there many? Who is lying? Aren’t half-truths lies too? What is our duty? How can we explain what happened? Chronology, exact details, events leading up to it, causes, consequences. Could we thus give a face, memory and dignity back to each one of the victims?
