    • Synopsis
    • Tadeusz, a 90-year old Polish amateur chess player, gets memories and present time experiences mixed up. He volunteered for the Republican army during the Spanish Civil War, arrived in Buenos Aires in 1939 in a self imposed exile, and got a job as a construction worker digging the underground tunnels. There, he held different positions until his retirement.

He has a godson, Orlando (45) who is in charge of Tadeusz. Orlando works as motorman in the underground. Tadeusz visits him regularly. Tadeusz waits for Orlando in the Avenida de Mayo station, near the Segovia mural painting, close to a newsstand belonging to Pepe (60 years), Orlando's friend.

Tadeusz lives alone. He reluctantly takes some prescription pills which have an undesirable side effect: Sexual dysfunction. He is tormented by the loss of his manhood, a symbol of what he still keeps of his past splendor, his deep wish to make his own way. He is recurrently visited by the fond memories of his past loves: Krizia, his adolescent love of whom he still keeps a letter dated 1939, and Nuria, his passionate love during the war, with whom he also shared an ideology and youth's dreams.
At present he has a partner, Teté (60) who visits him frequently. They share their loneliness.
His systematic refusal to take the medicines prescribed by the doctor generates permanent quarrels with his godson, who is concerned about Tadeusz health.

Tadeusz has an old friend, Lampini (90), former workmate at the underground, who one day tells him about his decision to return to Italy and die in his homeland.

Tadeusz confesses before Sergio –an enthusiast at the chess club- that he has recurrent thoughts of his past in Poland and Spain, and of his two past loves: Nuria and Kryzia, respectively. Sergio gets involved and finds out in the Internet that Nuria has died, while Kryzia is still alive... and waiting for Tadeusz.

Tadeusz decides to travel to Poland and meet Kryzia again.
Just like Lampini, he decides to leave and never come back to Argentina, and die in his homeland.

He does not have enough money for the ticket. This makes him feel distressed. His friends and relatives, moved by his decision, gather some money for him. Finally, one of the amateur chess players at the club contacts him with a stamp collector, who becomes interested in the Polish stamp in Krizia's letter of the year 1939 and Tadeusz obtains the necessary money for the trip.
Tadeusz, says goodbye at the airport, and leaves.
