    • Synopsis
    • Ignoring all advice, she travels to the birthplace of flamenco, JEREZ DE LA FRONTERA, to learn from great gypsy masters of the art and to understand the deeper meaning behind the baile (dance) and the cante (song). Being an outsider, Maria is faced with the gypsies’ jealousy and betrayal as her drive to succeed is challenged. Undaunted, she slowly enters gypsy flamenco society ultimately marrying into a traditional gypsy family. By following her dream Maria not only finds love, but also discovers something much deeper— what it means to live her life in flamenco by freeing her deepest passions for the dance, the art and life itself.

Filled with incredible dancing with an original soundtrack, STREETS OF FLAMENCO is the story of Maria’s journey, her passion for her art and the true nature of gypsy flamenco. This multi-award winning documentary is beautifully filmed on location in Los Angeles, Madrid and the flamenco cities of Jerez de la Frontera, Sevillia, Cadiz and Rota in the south of Spain.

Today, Maria and Pelé continue to make Jerez their home. Singer/Songwriter Pelé, with partner Curro Carrasco and their band Navajita Platéa are double platinum, Latin Grammy nominated artists. Maria Bermúdez is the Principal Dancer and Artistic Director of her own company of flamenco artists from Jerez, SONIDOS GITANOS. Internationally recognized for its spontaneous spirit and passionate commitment to showcasing the finest flamenco artists from the city now officially recognized as The City of Flamenco, the company has performed over the past 15 years in major concert halls and venues the world over.
