    • Synopsis
    • This tiny speck of land in the Indian Ocean has been protected for millennia by the elements. Strong winds and monsoon rains make this island inaccessible for four to six months of the year. Yet it has always been inhabited. It has also been coveted, desired and occupied from time immemorial by the Indians, the ancient Greeks, the Portuguese, the British even the Soviets were here for a time. The one constant has been the presence of the fishermen and the shepherds.
Twentieth century technology has brought this sparsely populated and underdeveloped island closer to the rest of the world than ever before and now the world has its eye on its incomparable ecological diversity and its natural beauty as well as its strategic position between the entrance to the Red Sea and the beginning of the Indian Ocean. This renewed interest in Socotra brings hope but also fear and apprehension to the people of Socotra, hope for economic and social development but fear and apprehension for their beloved Island and what may happen to it in the twenty first century.
