    • Synopsis
    • Shazia arrives in England from Pakistan hoping to find answers. Instead, she finds an underfunded police not investigating her sister Fahmeeda’s death. The case detective secretly hands her a file. He knows that when a woman dies in a kitchen fire, the meaning is understood but nothing is said in the Asian community. Shazia could do what he cannot; find out the truth. Shazia arrives at the house where Fahmeeda died, and where Tariq her husband and Shamim his mother still live, all three tell their versions of the truth, re-writing history as their stories unfold.
Tariq marries Fahmeeda to honour his late father’s wishes for the arranged marriage to go ahead despite Shamim being against the match from the start.
For Fahmeeda, this match is to remove the shame her late uncle’s elopement and marriage to Shamim brought to her family. Shamim watches jealously as Fahmeeda steals her son from her. Instead of gaining a daughter, she mourns her husband and the stillborn daughter she lost as a young woman. Fahmeeda’s groomed nature to please instils a sense of male power and cultural identity in Tariq, he had not realised he craved, he also begins to forget Katie, his true love, at least for now. Tariq discovers his father’s business is on the verge of insolvency, due to acquiring debts to provide a lavish lifestyle for them. He hides this from Shamim but Fahmeeda finds out, who keeps his secret. When Fahmeeda missing a period announces she must be pregnant, Tariq admits to Shamim that he feels trapped and lost; a relieved Shamim grabs this opportunity and tells him, it is time to send the girl back to Pakistan. Tariq using duty and honour as excuses tells Fahmeeda he understands she must play these games but their marriage is a sham; she should go back, he will look after her family, like his father did before him. That is not an option for Fahmeeda, nor is the shame it would bring to her family. He could back with her, leave the failed business and the non-halal life, and be where she felt he belonged. Tariq dithers, Fahmeeda knows about Katie but he is married to her now, they fight, Tariq walks out. When he returns, he finds his wife dead and his mother asleep in her bedroom, she heard nothing. Shazia reveals Tariq’s business papers, he panics, it is clear he has kept this secret. Shazia asks if Shamim knew, who denies any knowledge. Shazia has her sister’s last texts, she was upset about her fight with Tariq, when Shazia texts all couples fight, Fahmeeda’s texts back says that she has a secret; it means Tariq will return with her to Pakistan to live and happy and Islamic life with them.
Shazia shows Shamim’s statement, it is clear she knew about the business debts. Shazia tells them, when Fahmeeda revealed why Tariq would be leaving Shamim and his life with her, she lost it and killed her, making it look like a kitchen fire accident. Shamim hands Shazia a large cheque. Shazia tells Shamim in Islam blood money and walks out of the house.
