    • Synopsis
    • Circa 1960, it’s a turbulent time in Miami. Havana has fallen to Castro’s rebels, and the Mob and the CIA are keeping a close eye on the new dictator just 90 miles south of Miami. Glitz and glamour, and crime and corruption thrive side by side when Dave Riley comes of age in the Magic City.
A post-adolescent hoodlum with dreams of becoming a superstar recording artist like Sinatra, Riley is drawn into the fringes of organized crime. But, through a twist of fate, it is a failed extortion attempt that lands Dave in the jail where he finds his calling. Street-smart, confident to the point of being cocky and extremely intelligent, the CIA is certain Riley is precisely the right candidate for their covert take-down Castro operation. In a prison issued jumpsuit awaiting trial, the Agency recruits Riley to carry out dangerous spying missions their polished agents would rather not do themselves.
But just when Riley thinks he's got it all figured out, on Friday the 13th of April 1962, on a routine mission, he is captured by Castro's soldiers on a remote landing strip 40 miles outside of Havana. Under the direction of the Beard himself, by the hands of Fidel Castro's evil soldiers, Riley manages to survive daily torture at Camp Libertad and then at El Principe prison in Havana. On the seventh day, Castro orders Riley and five other captives to be publicly sent back to the United States on a Pan American Havana-Miami flight.
In order for the CIA to keep their covert operations from being blown, Riley is charged with kidnapping and air piracy upon his very public homecoming at Miami International Airport. Riley becomes the first to be tried under new federal legislation which incurs the death penalty. Although the CIA works behind the scenes to make the case go away, the prosecuting attorney is eager to make a name for himself. He takes the case all the way to the United States Supreme Court and Dave is compelled to fight for his life all over again.
