    • Synopsis
    • College student Kristel Lodema (18) and her father Martin get involved in a freak car accident in
which Martin dies. After his death, together with some friends Kristel travels to an old Limburg
coal mine to pick up the manuscript Martin, a crime psychologist, was working on: about the
Dutch 19th century serial killer Andries Martiens, who slaughtered several youths and was sentenced
to death. They also find an old Ouija board.
Kristel and her friends join an excursion in the mine, teaming up with students Mark Embrechts
and Paul van der Hulst. Kristel and Mark get romantically involved. Kristel gets haunted by images
of her father and Andries Martiens, and learns that this was the place where serial killer Martiens
was brought to death. Martiens had to work as a so-called fire-man: criminals who functioned as
fire-men had to detect mine-gas and set it off. If they survived the explosion they were pardoned.
That night, Kristel’s group returns to the mine just to hang out and have some fun. Bringing along
the Ouijaboard just for kicks, they contact the spirit world. Kristel, desperately wanting to talk to
her dead father, takes the lead but instead unwittingly unleashes Andries Martiens’ spirit. The
seance comes to a terrifying climax as one of Kristel’s girlfriends freaks out, attacks the others and
disappears into the labyrinth of corridors. Panic stricken and blaming the events on booze and
drugs, the others try to find her. The search becomes a gruelling nightmare as one by one Kristel’s
friends fall prey to a hidden and merciless evil power that takes possession of their bodies.
Kristel and Mark, sole survivors, discover that the events are caused by the spirit of Martiens,
looking for revenge: although he successfully acted as a fireman and survived the blast, he wasn’t
pardoned but left to die in the mine. In a nerve wrecking race against time Kristel and Mark have
to put Martiens’ spirit to rest and try to get out of the mine alive…
