    • Synopsis
    • JOSÉ, of Galician origin, emigrated to Uruguay in 1949 with 15 years. His family was forced to send him since they could not support all the children, and JOSÉ was the oldest. Already in Uruguay he becomes a hard worker, with few fleas. He forms his family and works for many years as a butcher. When the "dry law" that prohibits the sale of meat in Montevideo in 1968 was installed, their employers began to manage the black market in the capital. JOSÉ decides to continue in the business for his own and with a small truck smuggles cow that works in the yard of his house. He begins to do better than his former employers, who begin to see him as a rival. The excess of demand forces that the daughter of JOSÉ (ROSITA, 15) has to go to look for meat to nearby cities. On these trips he meets JOSESITO (18), a boy who also smuggles meat, and they fall in love. JOSESITO ends up working for JOSÉ whom he respects and a little fears.
Sometimes JOSÉ receives letters from her family, but never responds, ROSITA begins to feel curious about the family she never met. JOSÉ's business enjoys a good clientele, despite the harassment of the State (represented by an inspector). It also suffers attacks from other slaughterers, but manages to form a communion with them, centralizing the task in a single neighborhood. When the slaughterers flee the police controls, the police often shoot them. In one of those shootings JOSESITO receives a shot that wounds him to death. . The family cries with pain. But JOSÉ, far from lowering his arms, goes to look for the director of the "repression of the flesh" and achieves an agreement thanks to weekly bribes. Finally, everything in the business starts to go smoothly and generates a lot of money; but that's when the law is dissolved, and the sale of meat becomes legal again in Montevideo.
JOSÉ puts on a butcher shop and now works quietly. One day he receives a letter that notifies the death of his parents. He travels with his family to his hometown, visits his old house and his brothers, which he has not seen for more than twenty years. His family invites him to settle down again in Galicia, but discovers that his place is now in Uruguay. ROSITA, her daughter, stays to live in Spain to try her luck.
