A strange encounter in Berlin. A masked psychiatrist. Opposite him a woman, who tells him about her life, her journeys between Hamburg and Istanbul, her hopes, her world, her dreams and death. The story slips back in time. A nineteen year old girl runs away from Hamburg to Istanbul… for love. Though that love will only last a summer, Istanbul won’t let her go. She becomes unique - a German-Turk, a Turkish-German. Back in Berlin, she dreams of Pera; an old district in Istanbul, perhaps one of the most fascinating places anywhere on Earth. In the past, it was home to Armenians, Greeks and diplomats from many countries, soldiers and merchants of all origins. But her Pera housed another motley crew. Prostitutes and transvestites hung with shabby nightclub owners, as gypsies and immigrants crowded into once luxurious apartment blocks. Still the night shone bright on Pera. Money? A working permit? She has only a pair of scissors and a brush. With these she will build her life in Pera, in the heart of Istanbul. She becomes integrated in her own way - as Petra, an immigrant with her own story, her own life and her own special German-Turkish, Turkish-German identity. In one of the most colourful places on Earth, she finds a place as one of the glittering stones in its shimmering Bosphorus mosaic. But as she dreams her life between Hamburg and Istanbul, and lives her dream of independence and indulgence, death one day shakes her wide awake.
