    • Synopsis
    • There are about 3 million Turkish, Kurdish, Greek, Azeri, and Bosnian people living in Germany. A dreamy glimpse and rare pride slips into their eyes - whether academic, businessman, drug-dealer, school-kid or worker - once the strings start their vibrant magic. The SAZ – reminds of an ancient guitar, still custom made, with slight differences in style and musical culture from region to region.
PETRA NACHTMANOVA has a classical education. Living in Berlin she has been playing the local clubs with her Balkan band. Then she fell in love
with the SAZ and began to play as the only outsider with Turkish Groups. PETRA began to understand the SAZ not only as a wonderfully sounding instrument used to accompany ancient ballads, but as a key to a thriving culture, hardly known in the West. SAZ songs are like a lyrical mirror of an oriental tradition, kept alive through thousands of generations.
As only few Westerners have ever had a chance to enter this spellbinding
atmosphere, and no film exists to date about this rich musical culture,
PETRA and director STEPHAN TALNEAU decided to set out on a journey, leading to picturesque landscapes in the plains of Anatolia, to snowy mountains of Azerbaijan, to musical epicenters in Iran and to glossy concert stages in Turkey. Outstanding SAZ artists agreed to meet and play with her, and aside their vibrant music also share the anthropological richness and common bridge of their mesmerizing tradition, thereby creating a new and different portrait of a still thriving and surviving culture - embedded in vibrant music and powerful images.
The film starts as PETRA is invited by ERDAL ERZINCAN, a famous SAZ master, to play with him in his home village. With a small recording team they set out for this trip, which leads them to remote mountain villages, modern cities, historical sights, ignoring all borders and feeling a unity in the region.
Creating a different view on a world culture hardly ever seen in the West, capturing the underlying love, but also politics and wisdom transported in their songs... a musical road movie.
