    • Synopsis
    • Life is not always easy for Persian migrant Mohsen Taheri. The smallish man who is in his late 20s still lives with his parents. Although fainting whenever he sees blood, Mohsen works in the family’s butchery in Cologne. His mother just wants to see her son happy. In contrast to his father who does not think much of Mohsen. Mr. Taheri is not even willing to give Mohsen a possibility to demonstrate his skills. But Mohsen has found two ways of overcoming those situations: Either he turns to daydreaming - a world full of poetry, comfort and harmony OR, if he is in real trouble, he starts knitting. Mohsen knits a lot!
One day he gets the chance to prove his worth: To save the butchery from bancruptcy he heads to Poland to buy low-priced sheep. But the old van of his father runs down somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Eastern Germany. Mohsen does not get a warm welcome from the villagers of Oberniederwalde. Since 1989 they eye everyone and everything new and foreign. Especially foreigners meet with a refusal. But Mohsen pays no attention to it because he meets the woman of his dreams: Ana. She is a mechanic and has been a shotputter in the former GDR. Her heart is of gold and - like Mohsen - she is an exotic. Ana takes a shine to him, too.
Because she is a vegetarian Mohsen conceals his profession from her. He claims to get sheep from Poland only because of wool. Furthermore he tells her that he works in the textile sector. Mohsen does not guess that his white lie and his lovable character are raising expectations of the villagers. He kisses the village alive and yields hope where melancholy dominated: Cause Oberniederwalde‘s main employer was the shut down garment people’s enterprise. Also Ana’s father, who has become a grumpy man, worked there and was even a works superintendent. Now he is hoping like the rest of the village to have found in Mohsen a good catch and the scion of an old Persian textile-dynasty.
But oppositional forces prevail in Oberniederwalde and try to destroy the new love between Ana and Mohsen. Moreover Mohsen’s parents have been following their son to figure out where the Polish sheep are remaining...
SALAMI ALEIKUM’s way of telling the story is fast and floating. A cock-and-bull story loaded with lots of absurdity. ’One Thousand and One Night’ collides with shut down real existing socialism.
