    • Synopsis
    • 1981. Kate McLeod, 18, reckless footloose and three months behind on her rent, signs on to work aboard a Great Lakes freighter. There, the men harass her and tough head cook Hazel thinks she’s a ‘tourist’ who won’t last long, but Kate is too stubborn to quit.

Soon, she dives into a reckless affair with Boyd, who is dangerous and full of secrets. Kate is warned to stay away from him. One morning, Kate foolishly risks her life to photograph a fierce storm – and sees the ship’s steel deck buckle. She is warned not to talk about it.

With the ship forced to dock, Boyd tricks her into trafficking drugs. Their confrontation morphs from violence into passion. But when Kate wakes to see her battered face, she is horrified and flees to the ship.

Then, one of Kate’s storm photographs is published and Kate has to decide whether to show the rest and lose her new friends’ jobs or stay quiet and risk their lives. She takes a stand – and suffers the disdain of everyone. Hazel is injured and flown home.

When the ship docks, Kate goes to visit Hazel and finds her disconsolate and having a heart attack. She calls for help but it is too late. Kate is devastated to lose her first true friend.

As the film ends, Kate is boarding another boat, no longer a tourist, but humbly and proudly accepting her place in this dangerous, exciting and hard life.
