SYNOPSIS Biologist Dr. Alexandra Langstrom, along with two other scientists and their Native guide, Merrick, navigate the Aleutian Islands in search of the after-effects of Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster. The group becomes stranded after a storm, only to find a derelict Japanese research ship aground on a jetty. Upon investigation, the group surmises the crew has abandoned the grunge- covered vessel until they find the Captain, feverish and delirious, hiding in a storage room. A storm surge pulls the ship off the rocks with the team onboard and the group finds themselves trapped on the vessel adrift in freezing Alaskan waters. One of the scientists, Dr. Rei Park, disappears while trying to interview the Captain. The two remaining scientists, Alex and Noah, witness the Captain begin to transform into something horrific, but his metamorphosis is cut short by a blast from Merrick's rifle. Alex learns that rogue experiments carried out on the ship have created a mutation that is on its way to becoming the next step in evolution. While searching for their missing team member, Merrick is killed by a terrible, mutated creatures. Alex and Noah must figure out a way to not only stop the creature, but keep the drifting ship from reaching shore where the mutation will surely spread. Alex finds she is all alone after a creature infects Noah in an attack. She struggles to stay alive long enough to place a home-made bomb deep inside the hull of the infested ship. As she prepares to blow up the ship and herself along with it, she hears the faint voice of Rei, the missing scientist. Alex rescues Rei, only to find a larger "hive" of creatures, hatching in the depths of the ship. Alex sets the bomb, and escapes with Rei on a life raft while the ship explodes and sinks into the abyss of the North Pacific.
