    • Synopsis
    • Rebel is based on the true story of the first American woman soldier. In 1782, at the age of 22, Deborah Sampson disguised herself as a man, joined the Continental Army, and fought in the American Revolutionary War against the British. Her sex undiscovered, she lived with the men at West Point for two years, fought in several battles, and received high honors for her service.

Rebel’s story begins with Deborah’s fierce need to escape her life as an indentured servant in a small rural Massachusetts town. She binds her breasts, dresses as a young man, and manages to enlist in the Continental Army. It is not until she finds herself on the battlefield that she begins to realize where her convictions and passions lie. She also witnesses firsthand the senseless slaughter of human life and the staggering cost of warfare.

When a failed mission results in an ambush that leaves her fellow soldiers dead, Deborah learns that a traitor is in the camp at Westpoint. Against a ticking clock, she must figure out which man in her unit is responsible for leaking secrets to the British. Young and inexperienced, Deborah must mature quickly before more of her fellow comrades are killed. Rebel is a true coming of age story set against the passionate landscape of the notion of democracy and the birth of America.
