Set in the time when the 19th century turns into the 20th, this is a tale of the monster of female liberation rising up from the slab and stalking the land. The “monster” is embodied in the form of the beautiful Bella Baxter, a woman who, after a successful suicide, is restored to life by the hands of the brilliant, reclusive doctor and wealthy philanthropist Godwin Baxter. Under Godwin’s tutelage, Bella progresses rapidly through emotional puberty and adolescence. She meets and becomes engaged to Godwin’s acquaintance Archibald McCandless, a poor medical student. They instantly fall in love and are engaged to wed. However, in her growing adolescence with the body of a mature and beautiful woman, she elopes with lascivious lawyer Duncan Wedderburn for love and adventure on ‘The Continent’. Having exhausted Wedderburn, she returns to marry McCandless, her true love. However, their future happiness and her wonderful new maturity are threatened when her husband from her former life - the man who drove her to suicide - appears and claims her back.
