The documentary Vrede zij met u (‘Peace be with you’, working title) is a film about mosque architecture, cultural diversity, religion and rituals, government intervention and bureaucratic impotence, but it is equally about money, power and perseverance. The genesis and the design process for the Essalaam Mosque are portrayed in a chronological account. The mosque’s materialization and formal idiom as well as the public debate around it are explored in interviews with the architects, commissioners and critics, also revealing the impact of mosques on the city’s physical space. The film also zooms in on the Moroccan community in Rotterdam, the transformation of Rotterdam-Zuid (Pact op Zuid), the actual construction process, the attitude of the city council, the financing of the mosque and the identity of the patrons, which prompted an investigation into possible links with terrorist flows of funds. The documentary Vrede zij met u is a film about the multicultural society of today. The producers, Ferri Ronteltap and Claire Beke, intend to capture a socio-political juncture with this documentary.
