    • Synopsis
    • ‘OXI: An Act of Resistance’ seamlessly weaves a web of fiction and documentary. It is a vital international feature film for today, which draws on the great classical dramas of Sophocles (Antigone / Oedipus Rex), Aristophanes (The Frogs), and the poetry of Cavafy. It underpins these with the contemporary philosophical and political insights of: Étienne Balibar, Hélène Cixous and Antonio Negri. The film holds a mirror to the ever-present abuse of state power by those who act out their roles on the political stage.

The film is a direct response to the current crisis, being imposed on European countries under the name ‘AUSTERITY’. It also addresses many of the misperceptions of Greek culture and history that are promoted as part of a program of destructive propaganda against the country and its people.

Though the film is deadly serious in intent, it contains flashes of comedy, offered by Dominique Pinon in the role of a mysterious ‘Investigator’ as he confronts a modern day ‘Sphinx’ (Gabriella Wright), who he accuses of stealing and profiting from the re-writing of Greek classics. On his quest to find the truth in present day Athens we are introduced to leading contemporary figures in Greek culture: Manolis Glezos, (Politician / Resistance fighter WWII), Antigone Lyberaki (Politician / Economist), Thodoros Terzopoulos (Theatre director) and Kostas Vaxevanis (Journalist). But, is the Investigator’s search just another myth being created by the Sphinx, as she manipulates the characters in Sophocles plays?

By looking to the past ‘OXI An Act of Resistance’ builds on a universal theme investigating the nature of power and the fragility of the human condition, not just relevant to Greece today, but in all places that are vulnerable to blind economic forces.
