    • Synopsis
    • The main character of the film My dear Munchausen has been created on the basis of the historical personality of Munchausen portrayed in the works of Raspe un Berger.
The story about Munchausen is a story about freedom. About freedom to be a human, to be yourself, to be different. His adventures have captured the attention of a wide circle of readers for three centuries. Munchausen offers them to feel the freedom, the liberation from the oppressions of their own minds. What else than his own rational mind is the prison of the modern man?
The main idea of the film is that Munchausen follows his vision of the world, irrespective of the fact that the world with its tough and time-restricted canons is trying to deprive him of this possibility. His world vision possesses such particularity that is impossible to conceal. His imagination paints the life and possibilities available to a person of the 21st century, but which seem absolutely incredible to a European of the 18th century.
The ability of Munchausen to love Jacobine when a woman can be simply consumed seems equally incredible to his contemporaries. Why make heroic actions and suffer, if you can simply pay the debts of the future father-in-law? Why not lock away the purchased jewel in the family house as the Burgomaster of Riga City Narishkin had planned to do with Jacobine?
The plot of the film starts when young Russo – Turkish war hero Munchausen arrives in Saint-Petersburg. He possesses everything a young man could wish – the respect of his fellow soldiers, the reputation of a man with great wit and imagination and even the admiration of the Tsarevna Anna Jehovna of Russia. Tsarevna allows him to pass the rest of his service in Riga so that Munchausen could marry his sweetheart Jacobine – the daughter of Riga’s arbiter George fon Dunten.
Upon his arrival in Riga Munchausen finds out that his friend and comrade during the recent war duke Narishkin has been newly appointed as the city’s governor. Narishkin is still not content. Overtaken by jealousy, he publicly announces the court’s favourite Munchausen to be a liar and fraud.
Munchausen must defend everything that is dear to him - his good reputation, his honour and his beloved Jacobine.
