    • Synopsis
    • In Uganda, parents infected with AIDS write Memory Books for their children – these are perhaps the most important documents of our time.
Unless a decisive effort is undertaken to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS, it is estimated that up to forty million children will have been orphaned by the disease by 2010.
Uganda has proven to be the most successful country in Africa at fighting the spread of the disease, but it also has the most AIDS orphans in the world, a number currently put at two million. When their parents die, children are left to fend for themselves.
And children who grow up being parents for one another begin their lives with no
      past and an uncertain future.
For this reason, a very special project was created in Uganda: Parents write Memory Books containing their family histories. This helps the children remember their parents, their traditions, and their values. The children are gently prepared for the fact that their parents are dying. The parents – usually mothers – use Memory Books to tell their children of their own personal histories and that of their families.
Parents write of their own childhoods, of memories of their own parents, and tell of the hopes that they have for their children. The children who are left behind are given knowledge of where they come from, and where they can go in life. A Memory Book is an invaluable gift of strength and support.
Experience has shown that the children of parents with AIDS are better able to deal with the loss of their parents when they are given the opportunity to talk about what is happening while their parents are still alive. Memory Books offer comfort to these children, a means for the parents to speak to their children after they are gone.
It´s a film about how Africa lives and how hope for a new beginning is born out of deep tragedy.
