On August 26, 1071, nearly a thousand years ago, Alp Arslan, the sultan of the Muslim Turkic Seljuk dynasty, defeated a large Byzantium army led by Romanos IV Diogenes, the emperor of the Greek-led Christian em- pire and a great power of the time along with Europe’s Holy Roman Empire, at the Battle of Malazgirt.
