    • Synopsis
    • Lasang Ug Lumad (International Title: Lumads and Woodlands) embarks on the arguable conflict between the forest conservation and Lumad communities’ livelihoods in Mindanao island, south of the Philippines. The forest rangers, the environment bureau, and other NGOs are fighting for the forests but the Lumad communities convert the lands to agricultural, thereby affecting the land area of the forests. Eldrein, a forest ranger, risks his daily life to protect the forests. Risks include disputes from illegal deforesters and Lumads. The perspective then shifts to the Lumads as we get to know them. Datu Julie, the tribe leader’s relative, goes on with their daily lives that revolve around banana plantations. Their lives are at stake when it escalates to the military.
Their stories and the bigger issue question the binary opposites of which should be prioritized by the government. Should it be the communities and their livelihoods? Or should it be the forests that have long-term effects when not conserved? The local government and the Department of Agriculture balance both subjects. But this isn’t enough to resolve the issue. A bigger resolution may be the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals since it suggests long-term balanced solutions that protects the forests and assists the communities in their livelihoods.
