Love Letters Are Ridiculous is the title of a poem by the great Portuguese Writer Fernando Pessoa.
This and other poems by the Author sew the film, which tells the story of a father of five daughters, named with flower names: Lily, Dahlia, Gardenia, Hortense (hydrangea) and Violet. He used to call them as his garden of flowers, and like in any garden, perfume and thorns. And being at that time, “marriage”, the only probable destiny of a woman in that place, this fate becomes a great battle for him and his daughters, a crazy, funny and mistaken search.

      This and other poems by the Author sew the film, which tells the story of a father of five daughters, named with flower names: Lily, Dahlia, Gardenia, Hortense (hydrangea) and Violet. He used to call them as his garden of flowers, and like in any garden, perfume and thorns. And being at that time, “marriage”, the only probable destiny of a woman in that place, this fate becomes a great battle for him and his daughters, a crazy, funny and mistaken search.

      Lily, at only 15, offers herself to her boyfriend, to prove that she was still virgin, and then he abandons her for that. She tries to commit suicide and her father finds out her plot, and forces the boyfriend to marry her with the help of the police. Dahlia, 25, lies saying she is 22, afraid of losing a possible husband, and swears she would kill her if not marrying. Gardenia, 33, is the only one who married, she is waiting her 4th child, but unfortunately she dies when gives birth. Hortense, 36, does not take part in the story, because at 22, afraid of being unmarried, she conceals herself in a convent. And Violet, 40, absolutely unmarried, while helping Dahlia to write letters to a possible husband, falls in love with him, letting Dahlia in total despair. But Dahlia keeps on her tireless search for a husband.
