    • Synopsis
    • In 1908 in Yasnaya Polyana the first footage of the count Leo Tolstoy is shot secretly. Soon operators are officially allowed to work on the 80-year anniversary of the count. The footage, that brought to us the character of the living genius, contains exceptional moments – his family joyfully striking poses for the camera and Tolstoy himself, more interested in lonesome walks. The cameras see the eager and jealous wish of Tolstoy’s protégé and friend, Vladimir Chertkov, to be closer to him, and a similar wish of the count’s wife, Sofya Andreyevna. Everything is filled with their competition, their fight for Tolstoy’s heritage.
Struggling from these conflicts, Tolstoy makes up his mind to escape. At a small train station he feels too sick to go on with the race. Sofya Andreyevna follows him on a private train, herself followed by Tolstoy’s disciples and followers on another train.
Thanks to the improvement of digital technologies, that finally made the restoration of the historical footage and its use for artistic goals possible, the audience for the first time gets so close to the great Leo Tolstoy and is absorbed in the dramatic details of the last years of his life.
