    • Synopsis
    • Phillip Sokolov is a famous actor in one of the great Moscow theatres where he plays some outstanding roles including Shakespeare’s Merkutio. He also stars in a lot of movies.
One day Phillip receives a call from the KGB; he is invited “for a talk”. Phillip realizes he is being recruited... But he barely has a choice because he can’t risk his career.
Phillip is “asked” to help the Soviet Union fight the invisible foreign enemy. A journalist, Collette Schwarzenbach, has seen all the plays he acts in. Now she is in Moscow and seems to be particularly interested in his friendship. But... Collette is suspected of spying.
So the KGB needs Phillip to get close to this woman – to meet her in Moscow at a party and then, as if by chance, to go to Yalta “on vacation”. There he would meet her and somehow find a way to compromise her... to seduce her... to get her departed from the USSR.
Phillip has to make his choice now. He can’t put his career and friends at risks; he says yes. The KGB sends an eavesdropper Alexey Leonidovich to follow Phillip everywhere.
The problem arises when Phillip meets Collette. All of a sudden she proves to be the woman of his dreams – beautiful, sensitive, intelligent and cheerful. He falls in love with her and forgets about everything. For a while.
Their love story is as beautiful and touching as it is full of difficulties and danger. They try to get away from the spies, to stay alone for a while – just a man and a woman in love, but that seems impossible. The spies are everywhere – on the beach, in the hotel, in restaurants and in the street. The rooms are bugged, telephones are tapped.
Alexey Leonidovich reminds Phillip that the task is to seduce this woman. In that case she would be departed from the USSR immediately “for immoral behavior”. Phillip realizes that Collette’s career, her present and her future life - all will be ruined if he succeeds in this KGB task.
Phillip has to choose between his own interests and Collette’s. To save her, he must refuse from her - betray their love. Collette doesn’t know the truth about him, Phillip can’t tell her he’s a KGB agent.
The vacation is nearly over, Phillip runs out of time but he can’t decide what to do. Alexey Leonidovich is angry. He can see that Collette is “ready”. And that’s what the KGB needs to ruin her life and depart her from the country. Phillip feels nasty and disgusted by the task.
Last evening they go to the restaurant where they talk and dance as if there is no tomorrow. They feel condemned. They feel each other’s love as well as impending doom.
Late at night they come to Phillip’s hotel room together. He takes a sheet of paper and writes down: “Collette, I love you. I love you so much! And now I will prove that to you. In a second I’m going to start kissing you and seducing you in a rude manner. Please, protest, protect yourself and hit me as strong as you can! Slap me in the face twice so that it could be heard! After that I will leave. Forever. Please, forgive me. I’m so, so sorry... Now burn this note.”
Collette reads that. Phillip points at the walls of the room and touches his ears. Collette understands with a startle what he’s telling her. And she does all he has asked her to do. Collette shouts at him and hits him wildly and scratches him across the face. Only in the doorway when Phillip leaves, she stands on her tiptoes and whispers in his ear: “Thank you, thank you, thank you...”
Phillip comes back to Moscow. He’s lonely and totally lost. He knows he will never see Collette again. But he saved the woman he loved.
