    • Synopsis
    • Taking six experimental subjects’ marvellous and disturbing confessions about love as its starting point, the film – set in a laboratory – leads us down into the catacombs of the soul to examine the riddle of love in the face of death. The thesis guiding our research is that love is a disease that can be treated but not cured.

In a glass laboratory, the subjects lie down on a reconstructed version of Freud’s couch. The premise for each of the characters is: Would you prefer to love more but suffer more as a consequence? The experimental subjects share with us their most intimate confessions about love, all of which focus on contradiction as their main parameter. For example, one lover no longer wants to return to her ex, but she assures him in a sealed letter that she promises to eat his heart after he dies so he will stay with her forever.

The interviews/confessions transition into pieces of music each of the characters most strongly relate to, music whose songs are about love in relation to death: Purcell, Monteverdi, Handel, Bach, Corelli and Schubert. The mysterious question we are constantly left with is: Are we humans doomed to yearn our entire lives for something we will never truly experience? Is it true that only death can liberate us from the phantom of love?
