    • Synopsis
    • La Marea takes place during the "Retirada" when Spanish refugees fled across the French-Spanish border in 1939 to escape the Spanish civil war and Franco's fascist regime.

The story begins in the Argelès-sur-Mer concentration camp and unfolds into a mosaic of characters obliged to confront the progressive invasion of France by Nazi troops.

A choral framework based on the true lives of famous exiled Spanish composer and Cellist, Pau Casals and Elisabeth Eidenbenz, a Swiss benefactor and founder the maternity clinic in Elne whose lives inter mesh with fictional characters; Sergi, a Catalan anarchists, Inés, a gutsy young rebel, Walter, a morally compromised journalist and Carmen, a music teacher reluctant to get involved.

The main characters, Inés and Carmen belong to such different worlds that it seems almost impossible for them to get along. But Carmen's life comes to a turning point when a refugee's body is washed ashore on a beach near her home.

This story pays tribute to Pau Casals, who also composed lesser known choral themes. Three of these themes pace the structure of the screenplay and serve as counterpoints in the most dramatic moments.
