    • Synopsis
    • It was the summer I got fleas. The summer in which I took a bus to Istanbul with my Fatma Nine. When we arrived she wasn't there.
Once there was one, then there was none.
So, as with all Turkish fairy tales, began my story, my search in Istanbul for the woman who had been my caretaker, my first bedtime story, my first word.
I found myself all alone among millions of people, until I met Mr. Fleas. (I had always been good at making friends.) The bushy-mustached Clerk at the lost and found office gave me the first clue in the form of a trunk I didn't know I had lost. But it had my name and an address on it.
There, at that address in Yesilcam, is where I met Ayse Teyze - a spitting image of my nine and a woman of extraordinary talents. She could walk tight rope on telephone lines like it was a walk in the bazaar. She ran a tiny kiosk on the street, which turned out to be more than just a kiosk. But that I found out much later.
I searched for my nine through forever-winding streets, over ferries, chased by seagulls, holding a key to a secret door hiding in plain sight. Only to find her in the place I least expected.
You should look in the last place first, Ayse Teyze had said.
This is a story that's made up, but not untrue.
It was the summer I got fleas. The summer of small sticky alleys, tooting of distant big ships, loud street sellers and piss stink stronger than the morning sun.
It was the summer of my first kiss.
