    • Synopsis
The place: a town near Tampa
The principals: A killer, A gambler, A community of freaks
The plot: The story unfolds in 1929 when handsome JACK ROMAINE, a burned out gambler from the Midwest, finds equal parts of jeopardy and redemption in a narrative that takes its setting from a town actually established in southern Florida early in the 1920s.
The real-life town, still extant, is Gibsonton, Florida. Gibsonton is a community with an unusual history. Every winter carneys traveled south from places like Chicago or New York seeking a warm bed for the season. These were not circus performers. These were ‘freaks’ –- a cast of giants, midgets or malformed human beings – and even though Florida’s locals were fascinated by the likes of THE SIAMESE TWINS or THE ALLIGATOR MAN, they were not about to rent their apartments or houses to this caravan of exhibitionists. So the freaks established their own town, just south of Tampa, renamed in this feature-length script, “KALEIDOSCOPE.”
By the time Jack arrives in 1929, Kaleidoscope is well established. The community is insular, self-contained, a place hostile to normals, rubes, outsiders. So what happens when Jack is forced to follow a gangster’s stolen loot from its Midwest lair to a place where everyone is from somewhere else and where everyone has something to hide?
Somewhere between the Siamese Twins and the Fat Lady is a riddle, which Jack, if he is to survive, must solve. Jack must con the carneys, must sneak their trust, if he is to find the stolen loot he’s been blackmailed to recover. But something happens to Jack in this perverse place, something that changes his head and his heart.
Jack Romaine will be a better human being for having lived with the freaks of Kaleidoscope. If he gets out alive.
