    • Synopsis
    • “Josef - Born in Grace", an adaptation of Umakanta Mahapatra’s “Joseph”, is a story of finding purpose even when forsaken.

Father O’Hara, a missionary doctor, raises Josef, an orphan he found abandoned as an infant. While still young, Josef is sent away to Dehradun to learn to cook. Josef is sent back as an adult, with a reputation for his cooking talents as well as his alcoholism. Father O’Hara and his caretaker Maularam find themselves exasperated with Josef’s rejection of help. The situation begins to worsen when Josef is found taking lonely trips to an abandoned ruin.

The film explores in its unfolding of time, the different paths Father O’Hara, Josef, and other characters take in their journeys for spiritual fulfillment. Through static mis-en-scenes, the narrative of the film reflects the all-encompassing nature of time, pre-empting and repeating itself in allegorical hues. The stillness and the calm of the mid-ranges of the Himalayas give the film a sense of universality.
