    • Synopsis
    • After graduating from a Canadian university in the 1980’s and going through a breakup, John decides to ride his bicycle across Europe all the way to India.

In the Balkans, John is ambushed by children throwing rocks in a small village. One of the boys chases John on a horse. The boy falls off the horse and breaks his leg. John is blamed for the incident and thrown in Jail.

Once released, cold, sick and hungry, John makes his way to Krini - a small village in Northern Greece where he meets Haitho. John soon falls in love with Haitho and sets out to win her heart much to the annoyance of the village who thwart his romantic efforts.

Unsure what to do, Haitho sets John on a series of tasks that he must complete that grow more and more Herculean in order to gain her affection, hoping that he would give up and go away:

A plumbing project that backfires, creating a stream of problems that soil John’s image in the village. An encounter with a ram when Haitho’s father decides John needs to learn to tend sheep. A bicycle ride to a remote village to obtain a special beans where John is mistaken for a robber and beaten by an old woman. A hike to the top of Mount Olympus to procure a stone, where John becomes trapped in a sudden snowstorm and must seek shelter in a refuge, only to become known as “the man who carries his bicycle through snow.” With each task, John tackles the obstacles at hand, and with each successful return, Haitho starts to fall for him.

Yet the village, and Haitho’s family remain unconvinced. John is sent off to obtain a letter of recommendation from the Monks of Mount Athos proving that he is a person of good character suitable for marrying Haitho. Yet Athos is a formidable challenge: Guarded by a fence going sea to sea separating the peninsula from the mainland, it requires a visa to enter. Monasteries are built into rocky cliffs where the Monks adhere to Byzantine period practices with no physical comforts. Through a series of hair raising adventures John is able to convince the Monks of his good intentions and returns on his bicycle with the letter in hand.
