- Synopsis
- The striking story of an unraveling relationship between two women, Iza’s Ballad follows Ettie, an elderly woman from the countryside who loses her husband and with him her place in life. Ettie’s daughter Iza, an independent and successful physician from the city, arrives at the funeral determined to take her mother away from her impeding grief and the responsibility of the old family home. But despite her good intentions, Iza’s perfectly organised life in the city does not accommodate any dissent and, although she is desperate to be of use, Ettie struggles to find a place in this strange and isolating new world. As each act of reconciliation only brings further misunderstanding and hurt, the gulf between mother and daughter widens into an abyss that can no longer be bridged by remote memories of love. When Ettie decides to visit her old village, Iza breathes a sigh of relief. Back home, Ettie is engulfed by the fog of the past, and yet the way ahead is utterly and tragically clear.
