    • Synopsis
    • A century ago, like millions of European immigrants hoping
for a better future, my family moved to Detroit. They
worked in factories, raised families, and struggled against
hard times. I remember my dad’s parents discussing how
the neighborhood was “changing.” They were afraid. When
blacks moved in, property values declined. It was my first
introduction to “white fligh”. When we moved to Northwest
Detroit, we replicated our old neighborhood except that
there were no blacks. Taking his family as well as others
stories as examples, Steve Faigenbaum examines how the
idea of freedom affected dramatically the economic and
social development of the city of Detroit.
