    • Synopsis
    • José Renato, 35, geologist, has recently been left by his wife. Though he initially accepted her decision with a certain resignation, he was soon beset by crisis. Unable to come to terms with being alone, he decides to do something about it and embarks on a field trip to forget the pain of abandonment and solitude.
He loses himself in the North-eastern hinterlands, delving into a geological study that demands all his time and energy. However, once in the hinterlands, his search for solace becomes a nightmare. Little by little, the grating silence of the landscape magnifies the sense of loneliness in Zé Roberto, turning what was supposed to be a trip to forget a lost love into the exact opposite: everything he sees and hears reminds him of his former wife.
As he roams the backlands, he stops at the first village he comes across and starts talking to the people he meets, exacting from them their life stories. For fear of his own memories, Zé Roberto begins to rummage through the remembrances of others, and so immerses himself in the people and the landscape.
But there comes a time during the trip when these encounters begin to invoke still further the ghost of his abandonment. Tired of suffering, he is left with two choices: succumb to the pain, or re-invent himself in that arid scrubland.
