    • Synopsis
    • 1865, in a hamlet in the South of France, Timothée, a vagrant youth, comes down from the mountains, out of the woods, and passes as a mute. He requests shelter at the home of Dr. Hugues, the local physician, who lives there with his daughter. Invited to stay for dinner, Timothée communicates through signs or written notes that spell strange presages. Josephine is much taken with this young man who goes on to spend the night in the house. In the morning, he lives the hamlet and does not return until the girl is alone. Having induced a state of lethargy, he violates her. She comes to but remains in his grip. As he walks away into the fiedls, she leaves the paternal home and follows this man for whom she apparently feels only fear and disgust. The film follows the peregrinations of this odd couple until Timothée is arrested and tried and Josephine seemingly comes to her senses.
