    • Synopsis
    • Aurelia, Salaria, Appia, Flaminia, Tiburtina, Cassia… the exits along the GRA cross the Roman roads that once led a multiethnic population from all regions of the empire into the heart of the ancient city.
Two thousand years later, in connecting these historic roads, the GRA has become a symbol of Rome’s post-war transformation and created a new part of the city that was quickly populated by successive waves of immigrants. At first they came from the poorest regions of Italy, now they are African, Chinese, Bangladeshi, Filipino… so many new subjects of an underground economy that redefine the limits of the city each and every day. The Roman countryside has undergone a mixture of unchecked growth, innovative experiments in low cost housing, and extravagant exploitation of the public domain… all scattered around the ring road. The GRA is like an X-ray, a “progress report” of the dramas and delights of contemporary Rome.
Holy GRA sets out to discover this immense varied territory, unknown to tourists and ignored by many Romans, through the personal stories of people who live right beside the ring road. This is a choral story of seven city dwellers, each rooted in their respective neighbourhoods. Their personalities, contexts, ethnic and social backgrounds are diverse, but the GRA is part of all their lives.
The omnipresent GRA enables the documentary to weave together an eclectic and disparate community: from a Macedonian shepherd and his flock, to a young priest who counsels his parishioners on two mobile phones, or a shopkeeper struggling to survive in a difficult neighbourhood. The seven stories advance in parallel as the characters go about their very different daily lives.
These intimate chronicles are interspersed with a purely visual and poetic voyage. A tale of panoramic vistas in which we discover the unexpected urban and rural landscapes that lie in between the territories of our “soloists”. Individual stories and landscapes intertwine to reveal a contemporary tapestry of the eternal city.
