    • Synopsis
    • High Flight, a short animation (7 minutes) written and directed by three time Academy Award nominee Gerald Potterton, based on the poem by John Magee an American pilot who joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II.
Gerald Potterton is a British director, producer and animator. He is best known for directing the cult classic Heavy Metal and for his animation work on Yellow Submarine.
Potterton has been nominated three times for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film: as director on the National Film Board of Canada animated shorts “My Financial Career” and “Christmas Cracker”, and as producer for “The Selfish Giant”.
The action I am describing in this short film takes place in less than thirty minutes. It is an attempt to portray a version of the ‘Unknown Soldier’ as the action takes place almost entirely from the point of view of a soldier, in this case a pilot enclosed mostly in the cockpit of his Spitfire who we never see. The animation will be hand drawn but full in it’s action and portrayed in the style of a pencil and water colour ‘war artist sketch’ technique. Sound effects will be real, and of the time. The poem will be read as a soliloquy at the end.
