    • Synopsis
    • HEIDI, an orphaned girl, is raised by her AUNT DETE in Maienfeld, a Swiss mountain village. When
she is offered a job in Frankfurt, Dete takes the 5-year-old Heidi to stay with her grandfather, who has
been at odds with the villagers for years and lives by himself on an alp all year round. This has earned
the grumpy recluse the nickname ALPÖHI. At first he resents Heidi's arrival, but the girl manages to
charm her way past his gruff demeanour.
Alpöhi is basically a good-hearted old man, but he distrusts everyone and is determined to protect
Heidi from all the evils of the world. He refuses to send the girl to school; instead Heidi spends her
days on the mountain pastures, together with her best friend PETER, a young goatherd of the same
      age.
Three years later Dete returns to take Heidi away to Frankfurt, where she is to be the companion of a
12-year-old disabled girl named KLARA SESEMANN. Thanks to Klara's grandmother, Heidi learns to read and write; she is driven by her desire to go home and read to Peter's blind grandmother. Heidi spends a year with Klara, often clashing with the Sesemanns' strict housekeeper, FRÄULEIN
      ROTTENMEIER.
Heidi is very lonely and grows depressed in the gray, anonymous city. Suffering from homesickness, she takes to sleepwalking. Fräulein Rottenmeier is alarmed, not by the poor child's fate, but rather because she comes to believe that the old house is haunted. Finally, Klara's father, HERR
SESEMANN, and the sympathetic family DOCTOR decide to stay up and investigate these "ghosts".
When the doctor discovers that Heidi is sleepwalking, he shrewdly diagnoses the cause of her complaint and sends her back to the Alps. Heidi's homecoming prompts the Alpöhi to visit the village for the first time in years, marking an end to his self-imposed exile. Heidi and Klara continue to write to each other. The doctor visits Heidi and her grandfather and decides to recommend that Klara travel to Switzerland to stay with her friend. Meanwhile, Heidi teaches Peter to read and write. Klara undertakes the journey the following year and spends a wonderful summer with Heidi. Goat's milk and the invigorating mountain air agree with the frail city girl, and she grows stronger. But Peter is jealous of Klara and pushes her wheelchair off the mountain to its destruction. Deprived of this aid, Klara attempts to walk and is gradually successful. When Klara's grandmother and father come to visit they are amazed and overcome with joy to see Klara walking.
