    • The female universe of a women’s boarding house is depicted through Luiza’s point of view, the main character and one of its tenants. Women in their twenties and thirties and forties share the same house, but there is little dialogue among them.

Gloomy and introspective, Luiza faces the pace of time without great events. She chooses isolation, because she cannot interact with the other residents and within the society in which she lives. One day, Luiza gets an electric shock while turning on the shower and starts imagining that if she had died at that moment, people would only notice days later. From this point on, she creates a new way of looking at life and death. The fear and angst of being alone and dying alone accompanies her everyday. Luiza decides to buy a hamster and raises it secretly in her room, since it is not allowed to have pets in the boarding house. The animal becomes her only true companion.

The arrival of Marina, a new tenant whose personality is opposite to Luiza’s, stimulates a succession of changes in the routine of the house. Marina is talkative and high-spirited, and gradually breaks the impersonal relations of the place and awakens in the other residents a new level of self-knowledge and of friendship among them. Her presence makes the needs and difficulties of intimacy emerge, as these women get closer to each other.
